In a recent interview with Gephardt Daily for Bill’s Marketplace, Payne emphasized that while mold is a concern regardless of the season or the region, it is especially troublesome in the spring, summer and fall along the Eastern Seaboard. During those months, warm, humid coastal air stretches from Florida and the Gulf Coast all the way to the Mid-Atlantic states, creating ideal conditions for mold to thrive.
“In Virginia and Maryland, mold loads are driven by a combination of environmental and structural factors, including outdated building materials,” Payne said. “High humidity levels, seasonal moisture, and the sheer number of older homes and other structures built in close proximity, like those we see in Richmond, Mount Vernon and here in Falls Church, create conditions where mold can take hold — and it’s not just mold you can see with the naked eye,” Payne said. “For example, the mold which grows in a shower or beneath a leaking bathroom sink is easy to spot, evaluate and remediate, especially for licensed professionals, but it’s the hidden mold growing in a home or commercial property that can pose the greatest long-term risks, including potential health consequences.”
Mold exposure and associated health risks
While the impact of mold on human health has been studied for years, current research cited by the Food and Drug Administration, finds that damp, mold-infested indoor environments can trigger a range of health issues, including ongoing symptoms akin to that of hay fever.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mold-related health problems can be serious, especially for people with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease who have an increased risk of respiratory infections. The CDC also says people with asthma may have serious reactions to mold exposure, something Payne said he experienced firsthand as a child.
“I was exposed to hidden household mold when I was a boy. It triggered my first asthma attack when I was just 10 years old,” Payne recalled. “We lived in an older home, in an older neighborhood and, like our neighbors, dealt with basic maintenance issues over time, including an occasional plumbing or roof leak. But we never really saw any mold. Turns out it was there, however, growing hidden in the dark, its spores most likely spreading through the air by way of our home’s heating and cooling ducts,” Payne said.
“Once mold spreads throughout a home it can grow pretty much anywhere, including carpeting and carpet padding, drywall, upholstered furniture, clothing and even books. It’s hard not to be exposed to something that pervasive, especially when it’s being fueled by extremely high humidity like we are experiencing now.
“What we’ve come to find in the course of our mold remediation work are clients who say they’ve dealt with various ailments through the years, and it never occurred to them that there could be a possible hidden or airborne mold connection,” Payne said. “And while the latest peer-reviewed studies show that most people are not impacted by the presence of an average mold load in an indoor environment, those who are susceptible can indeed face very real health issues.”
“That’s why we’re vigilant when it comes to monitoring our results, which include regularly scheduled follow-up inspections to make sure our treatments have been effective.”
How the VaPure dry-fog mold removal and remediation system works
“While traditional mold remediation typically relies on some level of demolition — whether ripping up floors or knocking down walls — our patented VaPure dry-fogging process takes less than a day to complete — most often four to eight hours — and is usually demolition-free,” Payne said.
“The first step is a thorough inspection of the home or business. We check out the hidden places mold is known to grow, areas like damp basements and attics, beneath sinks, near showers, behind refrigerators and inside HVAC systems. We are especially concerned with potential sources of moisture which need to be mitigated, something we are uniquely suited to deal with as licensed building contractors.
“Second, we do precision mold testing inside the home to determine not only airborne spore levels, but also household surfaces. Those findings are then double-checked and verified by an independent third-party lab.
“Third, the actual mold remediation process begins with our mold-oxidizing fog being dispersed throughout the home or business. The sterilants penetrate deep into cracks and crevices, carpets, furniture, and vents, neutralizing mold on contact.
“The fourth step is the application of the EverPURE antimicrobial protectant — also developed by Pure Maintenance — which helps keep the neutralized mold from coming back,” Payne said. “It, too, is applied as a dry fog which coats all surfaces and forms a barrier that helps keep mold from growing back.
“The dry-fogging process is completed within a matter of hours, meaning most people are back in their homes or businesses that same day.”
