Benicio del Toro to Play Villain in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’?
LOS ANGELES, July 21 (UPI) — Benicio del Toro may play the villain in forthcoming film “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”
The 48-year-old actor has been offered the role and is in early negotiations, according to Variety. Sources told The Wrap Disney and Lucasfilm are keen on having the Academy Award winner come on board.
“Star Wars: Episode VIII” will be directed by “Brick and Looper” helmer Rian Johnson, who is also attached to write “Star Wars: Episode IX.”
The movie is expected to begin filming in early 2016, and opens in theaters May 26, 2017.
“Star Wars: Episode VIII” will be preceded by “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” on December 18. J.J. Abrams directed the film, which stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, in addition to original actors Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.
Del Toro last appeared in “Inherent Vice” with Joaquin Phoenix, and will next star in “Sicario” with Josh Brolin.
The actor is also scheduled for an untitled Terrence Malick project with Christian Bale, and will voice “The Snake” in an adaptation of The Little Prince.
