BLUFFDALE, Utah, July 26, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A 59-year-old man was handcuffed and taken into custody Friday night for multiple felonies after he allegedly pointed a firearm toward police officers and fired a shot.
Kevin Cheatwood was arrested for investigation of:
- Two counts of assault on a peace officer/family with use of a dangerous weapon, a second-degree felony
- Two counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony
- Criminal mischief — loss valued at $500 to $1,400, a class A misdemeanor
- Interfering with a peace officer, a class B misdemeanor.
Police were dispatched at 6:45 p.m. Friday to a guest room at Woodspring Suites, says an arrest document filled out by an officer of the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
The caller/victim said their fiancé had been making statements throughout the day about harming himself, and the complainant had heard a single gunshot from the suite’s bathroom, but the door could not be opened.
Officers saw multiple other firearms and a Taser on a table, and removed the victim and Cheatwood’s juvenile child from the room, taking them to a safe area.
“Officers made entry into the bathroom and identified themselves,” the arrest document says. “Kevin was observed sitting in the bathtub, and suddenly produced a firearm, a handgun, and pointed it toward officers.
“Officers issued commands to Kevin and began retreating to cover when a single gunshot was heard. Officers continued to issue commands while other resources arrived.
“Ultimately, officers regained entry into the original room, and made contact with Kevin, who now complied with officers’ commands. Kevin was taken into custody and secured in a patrol vehicle.”
Jail records show Cheatwood is being held without bail.
