OGDEN, Utah, Jan. 4, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — An Ogden man was arrested Friday in connection with the death of his 4-month-old infant.
Ogden City police responded to the 2500 block of Lincoln Avenue on a call of cardiac arrest of an unresponsive infant.
“Upon arrival, officers found 4-month old E.H., who was not breathing,” say arrest documents for Nicholas James Horsley, 27.
“Life saving measures were started, and E.H. was immediately transported to an area hospital, where medical personnel attempted life saving measures before transporting E.H. to Primary Children’s Hospital.
“Medical scans revealed that E.H. had sustained a catastrophic brain bleed which was caused by non-accidental abusive head trauma. E.H. did not survive the inflicted injuries.”
Investigators learned that only the child’s parents had custody in the relative time period. The baby’s mother said E.H. was responsive the last time she saw the baby, before Nicholas took her to another room for 10 to 20 minutes before bringing her back.
“At this point, E.H. was completely lifeless and not breathing. Medical professionals report that the onset of symptoms would have been rapid and she would not have been normal after the infliction of these injuries,” the arrest document says.
“While investigators were on scene, the couple’s 18-month-old toddler was observed reaching for a pile of marijuana on the coffee table and had to be encouraged to leave the marijuana alone. Through the investigation, officers learned that (the) defendant would grind the leafy marijuana, roll it into a paper to ingest through burning, or would pack it into a pipe and smoke it, thus making it unlawfully possessed.”
The couple also had a 6-year-old child living in the home, with access to drugs and paraphernalia, the police statement says.
Horsley was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of alleged child abuse homicide — reckless, a first-degree felony; and endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony. He was ordered held without bail.
