UTAH COUNTY, July 10, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — The Timp Fire, discovered this morning in American Fork Canyon, is now estimated at about 2 acres, and is now about 20% contained, according to an update from Utah Fire Info.

The first estimate, this morning, was 5 acres.

“The previous acreage report was based on an air estimate,” the update says. “But crews on the ground are walking the perimeter, so the acreage still may change slightly as it’s more accurately mapped on the ground.”

Firefighters are making methodical progress around the fire area, and there’s been little growth today thus far, the Utah Fire Info update says.

“There is a lot of dead and downed vegetation, causing the visible smoke in the canyon. The support from the helicopter bucket drops has been effective in slowing growth and moderating fire behavior, so crews can more directly attack around the fire.”

Resources include three helicopters, a hand crew, and multiple engines on scene.

“The Forest Service is grateful for the cooperation of state and local resources supporting these suppression efforts.

The Timpooneke Campground and Mutual Dell remain closed, but visitors who were in these areas may return to retrieve left items. Tibble Fork remains closed due to it being used as a helibase for helipcopters. Fire managers are continuously evaluating closures to minimize impact to the public.

There is a soft forest closure in place for the fire. The map below shows the closures and location of the fire. Please avoid these areas. This is especially important to not stop, slow, or park along the road. There have been multiple close calls with vehicles in the canyon trying to take photos. Help keep everyone safe.”

There have also been two drone intrusions into the TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction), grounding aircraft.

“It’s illegal to fly drones near active fires, as it endangers pilots and ground crews. If you fly, we can’t.”
