Professor who mocked Otto Warmbier dismissed from Delaware school

June 27 (UPI) — A university professor who described Otto Warmbier as a “clueless white male” who “got exactly what he deserved” has been dismissed from the University of Delaware following reports of her online remarks.

Katherine Dettwyler, who taught in the anthropology department as an adjunct faculty member, “will not be rehired to teach at the University in the future,” according to a statement from the school issued Sunday, The Washington Post reported.

Dettwyler’s remarks about the U.S. college student who was detained in North Korea made the comments in a Facebook post following his death on June 19 at a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Dettwyler had written Warmbier was “typical of the mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males who come into my classes.”

“Is it wrong of me to think that Otto Warmbier got exactly what he deserved?” she wrote. “I see him crying at his sentencing hearing and think, ‘What did you expect?'”

The post has since been deleted, according to reports.

Warmbier’s death early last week drew condemnations, including from U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the 22-year-old Ohio native’s passing away as a “disgrace.”

Trump is expected to discuss North Korea with South Korean President Moon Jae-in later this week at their first summit in Washington, D.C.

Ahead of the meeting, Moon delivered a message to European and Asian parliamentary leaders gathered in Seoul on Monday, through his Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon, calling for “all means” to be deployed to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, Yonhap reported.

“For the sake of stability and prosperity, the North Korean nuclear issue must be solved first,” Moon said.
