WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) — President Barack Obama took part in a freestyle rap performance by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda during a visit to the White House.
In a clip uploaded by the White House Monday, the Broadway show’s star and creator raps along to key words — including “Obamacare,” “NASA” and “Constitution — offered via a stack of cards by the Commander in Chief in the rose garden area of the White House.
“This is some serious business right here,” Obama said before the performance, prompting a laugh from his musical guest. “It must be a little nerve-wracking. I hope I don’t drop these cards.”
The pair stood in front of an unnamed drummer dressed in a traditional uniform for the clip.
“You think that’s going viral?” the President asked after Miranda’s energetic performance. “That’s going viral,” he assured.
The cast of Broadway’s historical musical Hamilton visited the White House Monday to return to the same room in which Miranda performed the beginnings of the song which would later become “Alexander Hamilton.”
The event, titled “#Bam4Ham” invited students to take part in workshops, Q&A sessions and witness live performances by the cast and others in celebration of the United States and Alexander Hamilton’s legacy.
“We wanted to change things up here in the White House a little bit. We wanted to open the doors really wide to a bunch of different folks who usually don’t get access to this place,” First Lady Michelle Obama said of the event.
