BURBANK, Calif., July 28, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Disney is toying with the idea of a “Rocketeer” sequel.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the ‘Mouse House’ is in development for a reboot of the 1991 film.
The 1991 version of “The Rocketeer” was inspired by the 80’s comic book and takes place at the beginning of World War II and during the golden age of aviation, where brash and dashing pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) stumbles on a top secret rocket-pack and with the help of his mechanic/mentor, Peevy (Alan Arkin), he attempts to save his girl (Jennifer Connelly) and stop the Nazis as The Rocketeer.
The new project, which has the temporary title of “The Rocketeers,” is being penned by Max Winkler and Matthew Spicer. The new story takes place five or six years after the events in the first film.
The original Rocketeer, Cliff Seacord is now missing. In his absence, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young, black female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in hopes of stopping an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jetpack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.
Although the film grossed just $46.7 million during its theatrical run in North America, the film now has a cult following.
