NEW YORK, Dec. 14 (UPI) — Jake Gyllenhaal is headed back to Broadway in 2017.
The 35-year-old actor and actress Annaleigh Ashford will star in a new revival of the Steven Sondheim musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” the Hudson Theatre announced Tuesday.
Gyllenhaal and Ashford played George and Dot in a three-night production of the musical at the New York City Center in October. The Broadway revival will begin performances Feb. 11 at the newly renovated Hudson Theatre.
The Ambassador Theatre Group took over the Hudson Theatre with a long-term lease in 2015. A Hudson spokesman told Deadline that Gyllenhaal was initially slated for a Broadway revival of “Burn This,” but that plans were scrapped due to the actor’s film commitments.
“We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming audiences back to the historic Hudson Theatre for the first time in almost 50 years with this musical classic,” Ambassador Theatre Group CEO Mark Cornell said of “Sunday in the Park with George.”
“Sondheim and [James] Lapine’s masterpiece is the perfect inaugural offering for this Broadway treasure box. To be reopening our most intimate of New York venues with this special work makes me excited about the future of the Hudson,” he added.
“Sunday in the Park with George” is inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by artist Georges Seurat. The musical first opened on Broadway in 1984, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the next year.
Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in the Nick Payne play “Constellations” in 2015. He last starred with Amy Adams in the drama “Nocturnal Animals,” which is nominated for three awards at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.
