HOLLYWOOD, June 12, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The scary sequel to “The Conjuring” took first place for the weekend, making nearly as much as the original film did when it premiered in 2013.
Taking in an estimated weekend tally of $40.3 million, the horror film starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson almost matched the $41.8 million “The Conjuring” did when it opened July 19, 2013, according to Box Office Mojo.
In second place, “Warcraft” brought in an estimated $24.3 million its first weekend in release. The video game turned film has resonated well with its core demographic, but needed to bring home a larger bankroll to cover the film’s $160 million budget.
The sequel to 2013’s “Now You See Me,” starring Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Woody Harrelson and Mark Ruffalo, premiered in third place with an estimated $23.4 million about $6 million shy of the original film’s opening weekend. “Now You See Me 2” has a global total of $45.8 million, as it opened in Australia last weekend.
Dropping to fourth place, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” took in an estimated $14.8 million in its second weekend out. The superhero film starring Will Arnett and Megan Fox has a 2-week total of $61.0 million and a worldwide tally of $116.3 million.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” dips to the fifth spot with an estimated take of $10 million its third week in release. The film, which stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, has a US total of $136.3 million with a global total of $478.4 million since it’s debut May 27.
