LAKE POWELL, July 17, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Twenty one houseboaters were stricken with carbon monoxide poisoning on Lake Powell early Wednesday morning, hospitalizing five.
Five medical helicopters were deployed to the scene on a vessel in Face Canyon within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, according to the National Park Service.
Kane County, Utah, dispatchers notified park officials of the outbreak at 12:45 a.m. and rangers responded immediately to provide medical support, according to the NPS.
“Initial reports were of four patients suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning onboard a houseboat. Upon arrival, a total of twenty-one patients were identified.”
Three adults and two juveniles were flown to St. George Regional Hospital, the NPS said, while the remaining 16 were treated and released on scene.
The incident occurred on the Arizona side of the lake and is under investigation by the NPS and the Coconino County, AZ Sheriff’s Office.
The incident is the third involving carbon monoxide exposure responded to by Glen Canyon rangers this month, the NPS said.
