University of Utah Looking for 400 Best Student Entrepreneurs
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – April 9, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) The University of Utah is on a mission to recruit the best of the best.
The U is looking for the “400 best student entrepreneurs” to live and to work in the new $45 million Lassonde Studios building starting in fall of 2016.
“We want to attract the most talented inventors, entrepreneurs and artists to study here and live together in our incredible new facility,” said David Pershing, president of the University of Utah. “Nothing like this has been done before. These students will get a learning experience not available anywhere else.”
Plans for the 160,000-square-foot building include four floors of housing, and a 20,000-square-foot garage on the main floor, though this “garage” is not for parking cars: the space will be equipped with 3-D printers, laser cutters, prototyping tools and company launch space.
“The building will provide a place for students to live, for students to work, and for students to launch companies,” said Thad Kelling, a PR spokesman for Lassonde Studios.
Students everywhere are encouraged to apply to live at the facility, and to become eligible to receive part of an estimated $3 million in scholarships. Students will start moving in August 2016.
The university is spreading the word through a broad marketing campaign in order to conduct an international call for applicants. Television ads are running in multiple cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, and Denver. The ad features students traveling from around the world to live at Lassonde Studios.
“The doors open in fall of 2016,” said Kelling, “and we’ve already begun recruiting the first cohort of students to live in the space.”
