A newly released statement by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is generating growing concerns over the health of LDS church leader Thomas S. Monson.

Questions about Monson’s health first arose back in April, when the 87-year old church president bowed out of a Salt Lake City meeting with President Barack Obama. At the time, the LDS church said Monson was saving his strength for General Conference weekend which was scheduled to begin the next day.

According to Friday’s statement, Monson still maintains a full schedule, but is beginning to feel the effects of his advancing age. The LDS Church issued the statement in response to an ongoing discussion about President Monson’s health on KUER’s Radio West.

“President Monson is 87. It’s natural that he and others in the Church leadership are feeling the effects of advancing age,” the statement said.  “However, he spoke publicly at General Conference earlier this month and attended all meetings. He comes to the office every day, attends all First Presidency and committee meetings, leads the discussion, and makes decisions.  The workload of the First Presidency is up to date.  President Monson has always been private about his health, but appreciates the prayers and sustaining support of Church members, as do all of the First Presidency and the Twelve.”

Discussions about President Monson’s well-being come on the heels of health scares for two other senior LDS apostles. L. Thomas Perry, age 92, was hospitalized last week for thyroid cancer treatments, while Richard G. Scott, 86 was treated for intestinal bleeding.
