WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, June 2, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are searching for the driver of a car that nearly hit two West Valley City police officers Friday night.

The incident took place about 10:40 p.m. after an attempted traffic stop near 3300 S. 1000 West.

Police were approaching the vehicle when the driver bolted, narrowly missing two of the officers.

A brief chase ensued, with the suspect’s vehicle heading east before turning south onto Interstate 15.

Police taking part in the pursuit opted to follow at a distance, and the vehicle exited west onto 5300 South before turning north on 1300 West.

At that point, police say the suspect realized officers were on his tail.

He made a quick U-turn, driving south on 1300 West before crossing into the northbound lanes where he brought the vehicle to a stop.

Leaping from the car, the suspect jumped into a canal and swam to the other side.

He then ran down a hill and disappeared into a nearby neighborhood.

Officers from multiple jurisdictions joined in the suspect search, including police from West Valley City, West Jordan, Unified departments and the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit.

The suspect remained at large as of 7:30 a.m.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
