SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 9, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) – A 29-year-old West Valley man who died after a car-truck collision in Salt Lake City Thursday morning has been identified.
The deceased is Antonio Martinez, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.
The incident, which occurred at 6:20 a.m. at Bangerter Highway and California Avenue (4000 W. 1400 South), shut down traffic in both directions, the news release said.
A green Ford Taurus driven by Martinez was traveling northbound on Bangerter Highway in the number one lane, and a semi-truck was traveling westbound on California Avenue in the left lane.
The semi-truck had a green light, according to witnesses, and had entered the intersection. The Taurus, witnesses said, ran the red light and crashed into the semi-trailer. The vehicle then went underneath the trailer. Martinez, who was heading to work at the Salt Lake City International Airport, was pronounced dead on scene.
It is not known at this time whether distracted driving was a contributing factor.
The road was shut down until approximately 10:30 a.m. while the crash was investigated.
