SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 10, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police have arrested a 28-year-old man who is accused of assaulting two people at random before trying to take an officer’s firearm, then taking another officer’s Taser, at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

The investigation started at 5:07 a.m. Sunday when a man, later identified as Scott Hollis, reportedly assaulted people in the airport’s pickup area.

Hollis “approached the first victim and punched him in the face, and then began strangling a second victim,” his affidavit says.

“Several witnesses attempted to help the victim and began calling out for help. I heard yelling and looked over the railing and witnessed several people physically fighting, and we responded to the location.

“Other officers and I made contact with (Hollis) and told him several times to stop, and (he) did not comply.

“We attempted to place (Hollis) into custody and (he) immediately grabbed for one officer’s issued handgun. Once (Hollis) was on the ground, (he) grabbed onto my taser and was able to release it from the holster.”

Officers recovered the Taser from Hollis. It did not activate, a Salt Lake City Police statement says.

“With the help of responding officers and community members, officers took Hollis into custody. One officer received a minor injury. Officers are investigating whether Hollis may have been intoxicated. The motive for the assaults remains under investigation.”

The incident did not result in any impact to airport operations, the statement says.

Hollis was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of:

  • Disarming a police officer, a first-degree felony
  • Disarming a police officer — energy device, a third-degree felony
  • Aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
  • Assault, a class B misdemeanor
  • Interfering with an officer, a class B misdemeanor

He was ordered held without bail.
