SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 23, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department are investigating a crash that left a woman with life-threatening injuries in the first minutes of Sunday morning.

The investigation started at 12:07 a.m. when an officer spotted a stopped car near 400 West and 800 South with its hazard lights on.

“The officer walked up to the car and saw a 45-year-old woman lying in the road with multiple injuries,” says a statement released Monday afternoon by Salt Lake City Police officials.

“The Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance arrived on the scene and took the woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives and officers believe the woman was riding a bicycle westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck the car head on.”

Because of the severity of the injuries, the on-duty watch commander requested the help of the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians.

The CAR Team is a multi-jurisdictional crash team that investigates crashes involving serious physical injuries or death. Members of the CAR Team receive specialized training in collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, scene photography, surveying equipment, crash scene mapping, evidence collection and computer-aided drawing programs.

The team includes investigators from multiple agencies.

Gephardt Daily will share information on the investigation as it is released.
