JUAB COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A Nephi-based Utah Highway Patrol trooper arrested an 18-year-old man early Monday after clocking his vehicle going 148 mph on southbound Interstate 15 in an area where the posted speed limit was a generous 80 mph.

Arrest documents say the trooper first believed driver Miguel Antonio Toledo Rodriguez, 18, “to be traveling well over 130 miles per hour. I was able to finally get close enough near mile marker 206 southbound on I-15.

“Using my front antenna of my radar system in moving same direction mode, I obtained a speed reading of 148 miles per hour in a posted 80 mile per hour zone,” the affidavit says.

“I activated my emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. A trooper assisting in trying to stop the vehicle was stationary near mile marker 203, obtained a reading of 141 miles per hour. Throughout this time, the vehicle had multiple other vehicles not only endangering his life but the life of others.”

The trooper near mile marker 203 also activated his emergency overhead lights, the statement says.

“The vehicle then exited the 202 southbound exit and began to travel eastbound onto Yuba Dam Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then veered off the left side of the roadway, crashing through a fence traveling a good distance coming to a rest in a field. The subject was called out of his vehicle and arrested.”

Rodriguez was taken into custody at about 1:48 a.m.
