WEBER COUNTY, Utah, July 19, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — A cliff jumper who resurfaced briefly Saturday afternoon at Causey Reservoir, then went under the water again is the subject of a divers’ search Saturday night.

“At around 2:30pm this afternoon, we started getting 911 texts and messages about a possible drowning at Causey Reservoir,” Lt. Sean Endsley, Weber County Sheriff Office, told Gephardt Daily.

“What we’ve learned is an adult male, 23 years old, was cliff jumping, and he had jumped into the water, resurfaced, and then went back under again, and never came back up after that.”

The man was with a group, which alerted authorities. First responders that came to the scene included AirMed, the Weber Fire District, Weber County Search & Rescue and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

“They all responded initially, but could not locate him,” Endsley said.

Ultimately, it became clear that it was a job for the Weber County Search & Rescue dive team.

There’s still an active search going on now,” said Ensley at about 8:30 p.m. “So that’s the plan for tonight, to search until dark.”

After sunset, expected just before 9 p.m., visibility declines drastically.

“At that point it becomes a safety issue for the divers, and the searching itself is obviously greatly hindered without daylight,” Endsley said. “So they’ll stop at dark, and they’ll be back tomorrow, with the daylight, to resume the search.”

Ensley said lifejackets are required by law at Causey Reservoir.

“Causey is one of the reservoirs where any use of the water — whether you’re swimming or paddle boarding or kayaking — it requires people to wear a life jacket,” he said.

“That’s been the law ever since I’ve been doing this job. It’s important for safety, but it’s also the law.”

Gephardt Daily will share more information about the search for the missing man as it becomes available.
