KENAI , Alaska, March 23 (UPI) — Human remains and clothing found on an Alaskan trail may be connected to a family of four missing in the area since May 2014, police said.

Rebecca Adams, 23, her two children, ages nine and three and her boyfriend Brandon Jividen, 37, as well as the family dog, were last seen at their apartment in Kenai, a port town of 7,000 southwest of Anchorage. Their sudden disappearance launched one of the Kenai Peninsula’s biggest manhunts, and was centered in an area northwest of the city, near the location of a correctional facility.

A person driving on a trail northeast of the town found the remains Saturday and called police.

“A very preliminary scene assessment has revealed information that points to the Kenai family that turned up missing in May of 2014,” police said Sunday in a statement. Law enforcement officials also said personal property belonging to the family, which went missing from the apartment, was found at the site but “positive identification from (the) remains” have yet to be made.

Police scheduled a press conference for Monday to reveal more information, the statement read.

“We know the family and the community have waited a long time for the answers in this case,” police said.
