CLEARFIELD, Utah, Jan. 18, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — A student at Clearfield High was arrested Friday after other students reported seeing him in a restroom with a gun.
“I spoke with the witnesses who had gone into one of the school bathrooms and saw a green laser beam, light strobe from what seemed to be a flashlight, and some of them saw a gun,” say arrest documents filed by an officer of the Clearfield PD.
One of the witnesses reported seeing that student afterward, “sitting out front of the Field House” in a pickup truck. Officers reviewed camera footage, and saw the student in question entering the field house.
The student was detained and questioned by police. Noting the student had entered the field house with a backpack, then left without one, a K-9 was sent into the locker room, “and indicated on the backpack,” the arrest document says.
The bag was searched, and officers found a Glock handgun .45 caliber, extended magazine, with a flashlight/laser attachment. There was no cartridge in the chamber, but there was a loaded magazine in the firearm. The firearm was secured in a police vehicle.
The student was arrested for investigation of purchase, transfer, possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; carrying a loaded firearm, a class A misdemeanor; and possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds and possession of a controlled substance, both class B misdemeanors.
Post Miranda, the student said he knew he had made a mistake bringing the gun to school and showing it to a friend.
“‘The only reason I brought it is because last night my mom found it, right. And we were having a talk, and she said get rid of it,'” the accused student said, adding that he brought it to school to meet with someone after school that he met online to sell it, arrest documents say. Messages between the student and the alleged buyer could not be located since the app was set to self-delete.
The student was jailed with his bail set at $5,000.
