No Reports of Injuries After 6.9-magnitude Earthquake in Alaska

NIKOLSKI, Alaska, July 27 (UPI) — There were no reports of injuries or damage Sunday night after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, officials said.
The temblor hit at 8:49 p.m. local time and was centered about 50 miles south-southeast of Herbert Island and 53 miles south of Mount Cleveland, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported. It was also about 980 miles west-southwest of Anchorage and 1,440 miles west of Juneau.
There were at least five aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Another dozen or so aftershocks registered between 3.1- and 4.9-magnitude.
No tsunami warnings were issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center.
The Alaska Dispatch News reported the closest populated community near the earthquake is Nikolski, which had a population of 20 in the 2010 census. The epicenter of the earthquake was centered 71 miles south-southwest of the village.
