One Dead, 11 Missing In Kentucky Flash Flood
LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 14 (UPI) — At least one person is dead and 11 others, including children, are missing in Kentucky after a flash flood was triggered by strong storms early Tuesday.
Rescue workers are continuing their search for the missing, most who live in the Flat Gap area of northeast Kentucky. One man died as he was trying to wade through high waters. Dozens of homes were evacuated and up to 32,000 customers were without power.
“We had four inches of rain and we had flooding from the creeks and there’s another round of storms passing through this morning,” Jeannie Kennard, deputy director at the Kentucky Emergency Management Agency told NBC News.
“We don’t know for certain how many are missing at the moment.” In Kansas, at least one tornado touched down. No one was injured. In Chicago, residents were reporting baseball-sized hail.
Elsewhere across the Midwest and the Ohio Valley, forecasters are warning that more thunderstorms can bring damaging winds and flooding downpours into mid Tuesday, putting some 67 million people at risk.
“Detroit could be impacted for the early morning commute,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Doll said.
The Weather Channel reported storms are expected from the Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley to the East Coast. Storm warnings have spread into parts of Virginia and North Carolina.
