Deadline.com is reporting that Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, the writing/producing team behind 1984’s monster hit “Gremlins,” are officially on board as producers of Warner Bros. new reboot of the film.

Carl Ellswoth, the writer of “Disturbia,” “The Last House on the Left” and the upcoming “Goosebumps” movie has been tapped to pen the script. Columbus, who went on to direct hits ranging from “Home Alone” to the first two “Harry Potter” films, was being rumored as a director for the project, but has opted out of that role, content to co-produce with Spielberg.

“Gremlins” holds a place a special place in movie history for being one of the catalysts, along with “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” for the creation of the PG-13 rating, which turns 30 years-old this year. The movie chronicles the story of a teen named Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) who is given a strange pet called a Mogwaii as a birthday present, only to discover that they multiply when they are wet, and if you feed them after midnight, they become murderous Gremlins.
