LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 8, 2016 (UPI) — Hugh Laurie will star on new Hulu series Chance.
The 56-year-old English actor will play Eldon Chance, a forensic neuropsychiatrist who is sucked into “a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness” after taking on an “alluring patient” with possible multiple personality disorder.
Chance must contend with the patient’s abusive, police detective spouse while dealing with his own divorce and troubled teenage daughter. The series will see the character delve deeper into “the shadowy, undiscovered country of the human mind” as the show progresses.
Chance is based on the Kem Nunn novel of the same name, and will feature Roomhelmer Lenny Abrahamson as executive producer and director on several episodes. Nunn and Alexandra Cunningham adapted the novel and will co-executive produce, with Cunningham also serving as showrunner.
“It was very challenging to get the depth and fullness of the book, but they did a phenomenal job, surpassing all expectations,” Fox 21 TV Studios president Burt Salke said in a statement. “Hugh has very strong feelings, and he will be involved in every aspect of production,” he added of the actor, who will also executive produce.
Laurie is best known for playing Dr. Gregory House on Fox series House, and has since portrayed Sen. Tom James on HBO comedy Veep. He will star in AMC’s forthcoming adaptation of The Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston, and provide a voice role in The Canterville Ghost.
