LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 7, 2016 (UPI) — Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor Pat Harrington Jr. has died after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, his family announced. He was 86.

A former member of Steve Allen‘s TV comedy troupe The Men on the Street, along with Don Knotts and Tom Poston, Harrington is perhaps best known for playing flirty, Indianapolis building superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the sitcom One Day at a Time, which co-starred Bonnie Franklin and Valerie Bertinelli.

His other credits include Make Room For Daddy, The Bing Cosby Show, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., F Troop, The King of Queens and Hot in Cleveland.

“He always made me laugh,” Bertnelli captioned an old photo of her with the actor that she posted on social media Thursday.

“It is with the most unimaginable pain and sadness, that I tell you my father, Pat Harrington, Jr. passed away at 11:09 PM this evening. We were all with him today and tonight: crying, laughing and loving him. This is the single most heart wrenching and physically painful thing, I’ve ever had to endure. I know many of you have lost parents and loved ones, and now I know what it’s like to feel the kind of sadness and void that will never be filled but only softened with the passing of time. My heart is broken to pieces and I will cry and cry until I just won’t. Love to you all! And as we head into this year, never be afraid to tell the people you love, that you love them,” Harrington’s daughter Tresa wrote in a Facebook message shortly after his death Wednesday.
