WEST POINT, Dec. 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Davis County Sheriff‘s Office has released new information about a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday night in West Point.
“Davis County dispatch received a report of a domestic issue at a home near 670 North and 2300 West,” a statement issued by the department says.
“Around 20:12 hours, a deputy from our office who had just completed his patrol shift responded to the home. Upon arrival, the deputy spoke to family members and determined that the individual, 43-year-old Nathan Paul, was possibly suffering a mental health episode.”
Deputies had been called to the residence the night before on similar concerns, the DCSO statement says.
“Subsequent to the incident Sunday night, Mr. Paul was treated at a local area hospital and released earlier Monday.”
On Monday, a deputy and officers from the Clinton City Police Department responded and “encountered Mr. Paul, who was armed. Attempts to de-escalate the situation both verbally and with two non-lethal options were ineffective.
“As the situation developed, two Clinton officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. Mr. Paul was pronounced deceased on scene.”
The two Clinton officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation being handled by the Davis County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol Team, the statement says.
“The Clinton City Police Department extends our sincere condolences to all affected by this incident, and we support the Davis County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol Team in their investigation,” Clinton Police Chief Shawn Stoker in the news release.
The Davis County Attorney’s Office is leading the multi-agency protocol team and no additional details will be released until the investigation is complete, the release added.
