August 17, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – The DWR has announced there’s still a chance to hunt in Utah this fall, for those that haven’t obtained an archery big game hunting permit yet.

The department said in a statement: “Permits are available to participate in Utah’s general archery elk hunt. General archery elk hunters can take a bull or a cow.

“Permits for Utah’s general archery elk hunt are not limited in number. You can get one anytime between now and the end of the extended archery elk hunt on Dec. 15.”

The general archery elk hunt started August 15.

Justin Shannon, big game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, said elk are doing really well in Utah. He said the state is home to more than 80,000 elk. “Taking an elk with a bow and arrow is a challenge,” said Shannon, “but plenty of elk are out there to pursue.”

Hunters who would like to hunt on one of Utah’s extended archery elk areas, must complete the state’s free Archery Ethics course. The course is available at wildlife.utah.gov/extendedarchery, and takes about 30 minutes to complete. Hunters must complete the course before hunting on an extended archery area.

If hunters have questions about archery elk hunting in Utah, call the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the DWR’s Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700.
