Human remains discovered in Washington City hiking area

WASHINGTON CITY, Utah, Jan. 13, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — The Washington City Police Department is reporting the discovery of human remains near the Bone Wash Trail and Elephant Arch hiking area in Washington City.

An online news release posted by WCPD, said the discovery was made by a hiker Sunday, Jan. 12.

According to the release, “Officers from Washington City Police and deputies from Washington County Sheriff’s office responded promptly to the scene to confirm the presence of human remains in various states of decomposition, indicating they had been there for an extended period of time.

“Detectives meticulously processed the area and identified the remains as male. The remains have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s office for thorough examination to determine the cause of death,” the news release said.

“At this time, foul play does not to be appear to be a factor.”

The WCPD said the identity of the deceased male has been confirmed and his family has been notified.

“Out of respect for the family, the identity will not be disclosed at this time. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.

“We also express our sincere gratitude to the various agencies who have assisted in this investigation,” the WCPD said.
