SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City organizations are offering free admission to furloughed federal workers as the partial government shutdown reaches the one-month mark.
Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum is offering free admission to those affected, it was announced in a press release Tuesday. Furloughed federal employees and their families simply need to check in at the front desk during business hours and show a valid government identification when picking up tickets, the release said.
“To help ease the burdens government employees are facing, we would like to invite furloughed federal employees and their families to visit Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum with complementary admission,” said Executive Director Laurie Hopkins. “We are so appreciative of all they do for our community and country and we want to help in any way we can.”
Regular business hours for the museum at 444 W. 100 South are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 6 p.m.
Utah’s Hogle Zoo is also inviting federal employees not receiving a paycheck to visit, free of charge. Federal employees just need to provide their federal ID at guest services and will receive free admission for their immediate family members.
“We are hoping it helps alleviate some worry and provides a positive distraction during a difficult time,” said Steve Burns, Zoo President/CEO.
Winter hours at the Zoo at 2600 E. Sunnyside Ave. are 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
The University of Utah’s art organizations are also offering furloughed federal employees free access to the arts on campus.
“As a community of artists, we recognize and appreciate our important role in supporting our communities and meeting them where they are,” said John W. Scheib, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for the Arts at the U and Dean of the College of Fine Arts, in a prepared statement. “We hope that in our theatres, halls and galleries, our proud friends can experience the joy and creativity the arts can so uniquely and powerfully provide.”
