SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 24, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City has won the bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympic games. The announcement was made by the International Olympic Committee Wednesday in Paris, host city for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall was in Paris for the announcement, along with Frazier Bullock, CEO of the Salt Lake City-Committee for the Games, and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, among others.

The event will mark the second time Salt Lake City has hosted the games, the first being the 2002 Winter Olympics, widely considered one of the most successful games in Olympic history.

The 2034 games are scheduled to be held Feb. 10-26, 2034, followed by the Paralympics March 10-26.

The IOC’s announcement was made after 4 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time and was celebrated by a raucous crowd of thousands of Utahns who had gathered outside the SLC City-County Building to watch the event live from Paris. Many of those in attendance were also there to take part in Utah’s annual Pioneer Day celebration.
