TOOELE, Utah, Feb. 4, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Tooele City police are confirming the shooting death of a man officers fired on at about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday near 1100 N. Main St.
Officers were investigating a person of interest after a shooting at about 11:12 p.m. Tuesday at the Quality Quik Stop, 188 N. Broadway Ave. A Tooele City Police news release issued Wednesday said that officers arrived on the scene and secured the area, and a man in his 40s was transported to a hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.
The news release also asked for information on the whereabouts of a person of interest in the case, 43-year-old Jason Shaw.
Sgt. Colbey Bentley, TCPD, told Gephardt Daily he could not confirm whether the man fatally shot was Shaw.
“We’re not confirming that at this time, but I can confirm that the individual that we were looking for as a person of interest from last night was a male in his 40s. The individual who was shot and killed today is also a male in his 40s.”
Bentley said the name of the man shot could not be released until approval was given by the State Bureau of Investigation and Department of Public Safety. He said he expected the name release to come within a few days.
Asked what “presented a firearm” meant, and whether the man pointed a gun at officers, Bentley said he could not confirm what had happened.
“I haven’t seen any body camera video or anything else yet, so I all I know is that a firearm was presented in some way manner. There were no officers injured, but there was a firearm that was presented at some point, which prompted officers firing.”
Bentley said he could not confirm how many officers fired, but did say that any officer who did would be put on leave, in keeping with Officer-Involved Critical Injury protocol. Investigation by an outside agency is also part of standard OICI protocol.
