KLUNGKUNG, Indonesia, Oct. 16 (UPI) — Nine are dead after a bridge collapse near Bali Sunday. Three of the victims are children.
Too many people reportedly piled on to the bridge between the Indonesian islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, causing the collapse, International Business Times reported. The crowd was part of a religious ceremony.
Dozens of people were plunged into the shallow water under the Yellow Bridge, with most receiving injuries from falling debris.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho confirmed that three of the dead are children. He said two of those injured in the collapse are in serious condition. Others suffered only minor injuries, news.com.au reported.
“Before the bridge collapsed it was already shaking,” Nugroho said.. “Some motorcyclists and people fell in to the sea and people in the area immediately tried to save them.”
It is unclear how many more victims may be trapped in the debris.
Bali is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, temples and religious shrines. It is especially popular with Brits.
No foreigners were injured in the incident, local police officer Arendra Wahyudi, confirmed.
