LONDON, June 21 (UPI) — Authorities arrested a man at London’s Heathrow International Airport on Monday, as he was about to board a plane for Saudi Arabia, believing that he may have ties to terrorism.
The unidentified 29-year-old man was waiting for a flight to Riyadh when police detained him and searched through electronic devices in his possession, authorities said Tuesday. He was placed under arrest when police found “information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.”
After his arrest at the airport, the man’s home in West London was then searched, as well, Britain’s Telegraph reported Tuesday.
“He was initially detained under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act and subsequently arrested,” said a spokesman for Scotland Yard, which houses anti-terror divisions.
“He has been taken to a London police station where he remains in custody. … A number of electronic devices have been seized for further examination in connection with this investigation.”
Multiple arrests have been made in Great Britain this year as Europe has stepped up counter-terror security in the wake of coordinated militant attacks in Paris and Belgium in the last eight months.
