WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (UPI) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans to waive fees at recreational areas they manage for veterans and active service members on Veterans Day.
The announcement affects over 2,800 recreational areas, including beaches, boat launch ramps and other areas. Service members and veterans simply have to verbally confirm their service when visiting the locations. Other areas are encouraged, but not required to join in waiving area fees. The waiver will not apply to camping locations.
“To honor the nation’s veterans, we will continue our Veterans Day tradition of inviting veterans, active and reserve service members, and their families to visit one of the thousands of USACE recreation sites throughout the country, free of day use charges,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Jackson, Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a statement.
“We encourage people of all ages to get outdoors this Veterans Day and enjoy a day of fun and relaxation while participating in the wide variety of activities that are available at our many recreation areas,” he added.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest federal government provider of outdoor and water-based recreation areas in the country. Their locations receive an estimated 370 million visits per year, and include over 400 lakes and rivers.
