July 19 (UPI) — A gang of trouble-making monkeys caused chaos when they invaded a government building in New Delhi, India, sending officials scrambling for safety.
Officials with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said at least two monkeys were spotted Monday inside the group’s headquarters in the A-block of the 28-floor Civic Center building in New Delhi.
Councilors said the monkeys caused chaos inside the building, but no one was bitten or otherwise injured before security staff were able to chase the primates away.
“I came out when I heard strange noise outside my office in the afternoon. I was scared to see a monkey standing close to my office. It scared away a person who tried to click a photograph. In the chaos one monkey tried to enter inside my office on second floor. I slammed the door from inside. It was really scary moment,” Mukesh Kumar Goel, leader of Congress councilors in North Corporation, told the Times of India.
He blamed security staff for the monkey invasion.
“Security persons are deputed at every nook and corner of the Civic Center and despite that two monkeys were able to get inside into ‘A’ block of the Civic Center which shows negligence of duty on their part,” Goel told DNA India.
Goel said the monkeys made it past security staff at the building’s main gate, but other officials said no one spotted the primates coming into the building and its possible they slipped in through a third-floor window.
An MCD official said monkey incursions are rare at the building, but the animals apparently found their way inside Monday while seeking shelter from the rain.
