SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 9, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An early morning house fire in Salt Lake City displaced five people and caused $30,000 in damages, officials said.

Salt Lake City Fire Department Captain Davin Halvorsen said in a news release a crew was returning from a medical call at 5 a.m. Sunday and smelled smoke in the area of State Street and 1300 South.

Captain Channing Jones ordered a search of the area, Halvorsen said.

The crew located a burning house at 154 E. 1300 South and rescued five people from the home.

“After waking and evacuating the family, our first priority, firefighters began fire suppression activities with the assistance of a full assignment response from nearby SLC fire stations,” the news release said.

“Five persons were displaced and the American Red Cross assisted them. This accidental, electrical fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage.

“With Fire Prevention Week beginning tomorrow, this is a great time to remind everyone that we must install smoke detectors, change the batteries annually and check the detectors manufacture date.”

No smoke detectors activated at this fire.
