SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 21, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Governor Gary Herbert has endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz for president.
Herbert confirmed his endorsement of Cruz on Monday morning at the Capital at a signing for House Bill 27 ─ a bill that adds an “In God We Trust” license plate as one of the standard options available to Utah residents.
Herbert said: “We were all anticipating a debate tonight, an opportunity to maybe have a little more clarity on the issues of significance, but as I’ve listened to the discussions we’ve had over the past weekend, I’ll tell you today, I will at the tomorrow night’s Tuesday night caucus meeting, I will join Mitt Romney in voting for Ted Cruz,” Herbert said.
“Senator Ted Cruz from Texas does exhibit constitutional values and conservative values that reflect Utah,” he said.
“I think Senator Cruz is our best hope. I’m a practical Republican and I see here in Utah that the pathway forward, the best opportunity we have to get the best man in the office is with Senator Cruz.”
With Utah’s caucuses scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, the state is seeing seen a flurry of campaign activity. Four presidential candidates visited the state on two consecutive days, Friday and Saturday, and democratic candidate Bernie Sanders is scheduled to return Monday to visit Salt Lake City’s West High School.
Cruz visited Utah Saturday, beginning his day with a 10 a.m. rally at the American Preparatory Academy, in Draper, where he helped officially kick off the campaign of Utah Sen. Mike Lee.
Two hours later, Cruz was at Provo High, where he was joined by former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina and conservative talk show host, Glenn Beck. To view video of the rally and read coverage, click here.
