COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah, April 26, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A prank gone wrong brought out a hazardous material crew Friday after students on a bus outside of Butler Middle School in Cottonwood Heights were exposed to an unknown material.

The material was later determined to be a harmless protein powder, but officials had to take every precaution for the safety of the students.

In addition to the HAZMAT crew, paramedics and police were summoned as a precautionary measure, Jeff Haney, spokesman for the Canyon School District told Gephardt Daily.

The incident happened at about 3:20 p.m., Haney said.

Lt. Dan Bartlett, Cottonwood Heights Police Department, said only one student was treated. The incident involved one student throwing the powder into another student’s eyes.

Bartlett said the material thrown “was base, not acid,” so was unlikely to do any damage beyond eye irritation.

“It was kids being kids,” he said.

Later Friday night, Lt. Bartlett told Gephardt Daily that officials have discussed the incident with the student who threw the powder and the student’s parents, and the situation has been resolved.
