March 9 (UPI) — Director Patty Jenkins confirmed Friday Kristen Wiig‘s casting as the villain Cheetah in the sequel to the blockbuster “Wonder Woman.”
“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our ‘Wonder Woman’ family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!!” Jenkins tweeted.
“I’m SO excited welcome on board Kristen! This is going to be WONDERful!” Gal Gadot, who plays the titular heroine, wrote in her own Twitter post.
“Wonder Woman,” which took place during World War II, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, and via streaming platforms, following its June 2017 theatrical release. The film co-starred Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Lucy Davis.
Gadot also played the iconic character in the ensemble picture “Justice League,” which came out in November 2017.
Set in the 1980s, the “Wonder Woman” sequel is expected to open in theaters Nov. 1, 2019.
Wiig, 44, is a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member. Her film credits include “Bridesmaids,” “The Martian,” “Ghostbusters” and “Downsizing.”
