Ruby Rose of OITNB Talks Gender Fluidity, Hollywood in New Interview

NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) — Model, DJ and Orange is the New Black actress Ruby Rose says she’s happy to be alive amidst a transgender movement led by Caitlyn Jenner, Transparent and her own show.
In an interview with Elle magazine, the 29-year-old who plays Stella in the Netflix original describes her own gender fluidity as not identifying with “one end of the spectrum or the other,” in a world of polarities.
“For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender,” she told the magazine. “I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one. So I’m somewhere in the middle, which — in my perfect imagination — is like having the best of both sexes.”
Rose says that how someone expresses their gender shouldn’t be limited to “whatever society — whether it’s work or family or friends or whoever — makes you feel like you’re supposed to be because of how you were born.”
Working on a show such as Orange, most of which is made by women, excites Rose, who says it’s a “wonderful” representation of how all-female teams can be successful. “It doesn’t have to be traditional old Hollywood,” she said. “We have to show that men and women relate to — old, young, gay, straight, bi, transgender, whatever. Everyone can relate.”
Engaged to clothing designer Phoebe Dahl, Rose says what’s next for them is an unspecified trip with World Vision and a new line of gender-neutral, gender-fluid clothing called Scallywags that they intend to launch in late June. Rose is also the face of Maybeline Australia.
