HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – October 18, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — “Goosebumps” dethroned Matt Damon’s “The Martian” as the top film in the US bringing in about $23.5 million its opening weekend.
“The Martian” dropped down a notch to second place its third weekend taking in $21.5 million. Its total gross domestically is estimated at $143.7 million.
Steven Spielberg’s espionage thriller, “Bridge of Spies” opened in third place. Despite huge critical and audience appeal for both Spielberg and the film’s star, Tom Hanks, the film underperformed its first weekend out.
Industry experts were expecting “Bridge of Spies” to hit somewhere around $30 million for it’s debut weekend. The film brought in only a $15.3 million payday.
Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” starring Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, opened at fourth place. The film took in only $12.8 million, a very weak sign this close to Halloween.
Finally, dropping into fifth place, after four weeks in theaters, is “Transylvania Hotel 2” with a weekend gross of $12.2 million. The Adam Sandler-voiced animated film has a domestic gross of $136.4 million.
