CEDAR CITY, Utah, Feb. 23, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are searching for a young girl who was happened upon by “two males recreating” in the area of Fiddler’s Canyon Rd. about noon Thursday.
“She was okay but very out of place,” the males reported to Cedar City Police after the encounter.
They told officers they spoke to the “adolescent female,” believed to be eight to 10-years-old, and offered her a ride off the mountain, which she declined.
They said she had long dark hair and was wearing a yellow coat or jacket with a backpack. Only a first name was shared: Mackenzie.
Both the Cedar City Police Department and the Iron County Sheriff’s Office posted on social around 4 p.m. asking for help from the public in locating the youngster.
Cedar City PD said she was last seen in the area of Fiddlers Canyon Road near the CV hill around 12:30-12:45 p.m. “More follow up will be attempted to identify the welfare of the individual.”
Commenters on the Cedar City police post on Facebook said they had been contacted at their homes by police looking for the girl and that ATVs and drones were also involved in the search.
By 7:45 p.m. the police post had drawn 149 shares and the sheriff’s 72 shares.
In the only update of the evening, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Cedar City police said the search for the youngster has included a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter as well as K-9s and search and rescue team members.
The female was not located in the area, police said. Footprints were found that were believed to belong to her. They led up the mountain and back down to the Fiddlers Canyon neighborhood area.
“Again, no one has been reported as missing.”
