SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 3, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police were looking for a driver who fled after hitting and bringing down a power pole late Friday night.
The crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at 2884 E. Hyland Hills Road.
Salt Lake City Police Lt. Scott Smalley said when officers arrived on scene, “only one occupant of the vehicle was still with the vehicle.”
Police were planning to track down the driver through the vehicle’s registration.
Smalley said it was fortunate that, apparently, no one was injured in the head-on crash.
“But it damaged the pole to the point where they’re having to replace it.”
He said there had been reports of smoke, but nothing actually caught on fire.
A barricade company had been contacted and was setting up “road closed” and detour signs. Smalley estimated that the area would be closed to traffic for a few hours.
As for any charges against the driver, Smalley said, “We’re looking potentially at hit and run and damage to property.”
He added that the insurance company for the car will have to compensate the power company for the pole.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
Smalley said, “The only passenger is not giving a whole lot of information.”
