SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 6, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect wanted by Salt Lake City police called a news conference on Wednesday to complain about his treatment, only to find himself arrested when officers showed up.
Jackie Sanchez, 61, was wanted in connection with a July 28 incident. On that date, an officer with a K-9 was called in after reports of a disturbance at the City and County Building.
The officer spotted Sanchez and another man across the street, and approached them, according to a news release from the SLCPD.
“The officer warned Sanchez about his aggression, but ultimately had to deploy his K-9 in order to prevent further assault and take the suspect into custody,” says a statement released Wednesday afternoon by the Salt Lake City Police Department.
“The case has been screened, and Sanchez is wanted for his active warrants: assault against a police officer, interference with arresting officer, and disorderly conduct,” the statement said.
Sanchez had summoned the media Wednesday afternoon to announce he planned to sue the Salt Lake City Police Department, saying a K-9 should not have been used, and caused him serious injuries. Sanchez showed reporters scars on his legs.
As the news conference was wrapping up, officers arrived and took Sanchez into custody on the active warrants for assault against a police officer, interference with arresting officer, and disorderly conduct.
