MYTON, Utah, Aug. 18, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Duchesne County Sheriff deputies arrested a man Friday morning after a report of a stabbing in Myton.

The call came in at about 5:17 a.m.

“The victim … stated he had been attacked by Casey Malin, without warning,” says an affidavit filed by the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office.

He “stated that Casey stabbed him multiple times in the neck and back, as well as his hands with an improvised knife.”

The victim said he had been stabbed at about 9 p.m. Thursday, “and that he had passed out after he had been assaulted, he then woke up around 0500 hours, he said that Casey was still outside of his trailer, messing with it.”

The affidavit says the deputy arrived on scene, and Malin, 34, “was attempting to flee the area in a white pickup truck. I would draw my firearm on Casey and give him verbal commands to get on the ground and not move, I would tell him multiple times to not move.

“After cuffing and detaining him, I found a pocket knife and a filed down piece of metal on his person. (The victim) would later identify the piece of metal as the weapon that was used in the assault.”

Investigators found four stab wounds on the victim, on the back of his neck, his back, and one that went all the way through his right hand, the affidavit says.

The truck Malin had tried to leave in was stolen and contained a stolen pistol, charging documents say.

“Casey was also attempting to steal items from around and in (the victim’s) trailer.”

Malin, confirmed to be on probation or parole, was booked into the Duchesne County jail for investigation of:

  • Murder (attempted), a second-degree felony
  • Two counts of theft of a firearm or operable motor vehicle, both second-degree felonies
  • Burglary of a dwelling, a second-degree felony
  • Purchase, transfer, possession, use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony

As in all cases, charges are determined not by police departments, but by the County District Attorney’s Office.

Malin was ordered held without bail.
