WASHINGTON TERRACE, UTAH – October 22, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – The parents of an eight-year-old student were arrested after a meth pipe was found in a Ziploc baggie in an elementary school.
A school resource officer from Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to Roosevelt Elementary School on a possible drug violation Wednesday afternoon. When the officer arrived, a teacher gave him a meth pipe she had found in Ziploc baggie with a book reader that had been turned in by a third grade student.
A press release from the Sheriff’s Office said the deputy researched the girl’s name and discovered she lived nearby at 153 West 5200 South. He went to the home and made contact with the girl’s family. Upon further investigation, it was learned that all three adults there were using illegal narcotics, and some of this drug use was occurring in the presence of three young children.
DCFS was contacted and they came to the home to help with the situation. A search warrant was executed and drugs along with drug paraphernalia were found. Some of these items were located in the same area as children’s toys and books, included an item of paraphernalia that was found under a pillow on a child’s bed.
The house belongs to the children’s grandmother, a 59-year-old woman. She admitted to using illegal drugs around the children, and indicated she may have accidentally dropped the meth pipe in the child’s book-bag.
The children’s parents, Bryce Floyd Tyler, 46, and Joanne Wiese Tyler, 39, were both arrested on multiple charges including three counts of third degree felony child endangerment, possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
Charges against the grandmother are pending and she was not arrested at the time due to health issues.
While conducting the search warrant for drugs, detectives learned that Bryce Tyler is a registered sex offender from California. After coming across pornography and other items of a sexual nature, a second search warrant was drafted. Evidence was seized and is being processed which could result in additional charges if any child pornography is discovered.
The three children, the eight-year-old girl, two-year-old boy, and 20-month-old boy, are safe and in protective custody. Bryce Tyler and Joanne Tyler are both being held in the Weber County Jail.
