CORINNE, Utah, Aug. 18, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — One man died and two others were able to get out of the water after lightning struck the aluminum boat they were using for fishing.

The Box Elder County Sheriff‘s Office was alerted at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday and responded to the scene, in the Bear River in Corrine.

“The incident involved three individuals who were fishing,” says a Box Elder County Sheriff statement posted nearly 12 hours later.

“The initial investigation indicates that the three individuals on the boat were struck by lightning, causing the boat to capsize and throwing them into the water.

“Two of the individuals were able to make it to shore and were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The third individual went under the water and could not be located.”

The search effort for the third man was conducted by the sheriff’s office, Box Elder County Search and Rescue, Box Elder County SCUBA Team, Corinne Fire Department, Brigham City Fire Department, Utah Parks and Recreation, Coast Guard, and the Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau.

“The submerged body of the third individual was located at 0530 hours using sonar and rescue divers,” the Sheriff’s statement says.

The dead man’s name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

“This is an ongoing death investigation,” the Sheriff’s statement says.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragic loss, particularly the friends and family of the deceased. We are sincerely grateful to all the professionals and volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts to the search and successful recovery process.”
