Salt Lake City police arrest alleged shoplifter after he enters another store carrying large knife

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 25, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 55-year-old man is in custody Friday night, after police say he was spotted shoplifting from Kohl’s Brickyard store, fled on a bike, and then entered a 7-Eleven while carrying a large knife.

Lt. Jenn Diederich, with the Salt Lake City Police Department, told Gephardt Daily the man fled from Kohl’s while an officer followed him.

The man also “had a 12-inch knife hanging down his leg,” Diederich said.

The officer requested backup and followed the fleeing suspect, who made it about a mile and a half before crashing his bike. That’s when he went into the 7-Eleven at 3311 S. 700 East.

“He had the knife in his hand,” Diederich said. “He didn’t threaten anyone, but there were other customers in the store.”

Officers went in and deployed a Taser to bring the man into compliance. He was then taken into custody and was checked out medically before being booked into jail.

Diederich said the man already had outstanding warrants and will now be facing additional charges of shoplifting and fleeing.
