Authorities say 15-year-old Bingham High School student died in South Jordan house explosion

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Nov. 7, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — South Jordan Fire officials have shared initial information about the victim killed in a powerful explosion at his house Wednesday afternoon.

“The City of South Jordan is heartbroken to confirm the tragic loss of a 15-year-old male student from Bingham High School following a 2-alarm fire and explosion at 10593 S. 3210 West yesterday,” says a statement issued by South Jordan Fire Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner and by city officials.

“At the family’s request, his name will not be released at this time. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and neighbors affected by this devastating incident.”

The explosion happened shortly after 3 p.m. Arriving first responders saw much of the house flattened and in flames.

Debris from the explosion was strewn in all directions, including a door frame, which was found across the street dozens of yards from the blast site.

Crews “worked to contain the flames and manage the extensive damage caused by the fire and explosion. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, and several sustained minor to moderate damage,” the news release says.

“Following thorough search efforts, the body of the young resident was discovered inside the home last night…We have been in contact with Jordan School District and they will provide counseling resources to families and students.”

There were no other reports of injuries.

Investigators from multiple agencies, including the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, were expected to be onsite overnight.
